VERB INVERSION - CORRECTION


1. Seldom does he write to his family.

2. Rarely has he visited us.

3. Hardly does he understand what she says.

4. Only in this way did they make the law.

5. Never before have I seen anything like that.

6. Hardly could I believe it.

Emphatic inversion of the subject

USE
- We use the verb inversion as an emphatic form with some adverbs, adverbial phrases, expressing negation or simple restriction, at the beginning of the sentence.
- When the verb is used in the Simple Present or the Simple Past, we must use the auxiliary verb do/did, as in a question structure.


- Some adverbs and adverbial phrases, which used at the beginning of the sentence are followed by verb inversion:
Hardly; scarcely ;seldom; rarely; never; not only; only today; only yesterday; only by change; only with difficulty; only by luck; only on rare occasions; not until; no sooner ... than ; no longer; nowhere; neither ;nor; in vain; little; not evenNo sooner was a new legislation implemented, than the unemployment rate fell drastically

Examples:

At no time has it been more difficult to fight forest fires than nowadays.

Never in his life will he make such a good profit.

Only after learning it could I teach local workmen how to restore those old precious houses.
